Can I still use my primary phone number with an eSIM?

Learn how your device handles calls and texts on your regular number when a data eSIM is active.

Yes, you can typically continue to use your primary phone number for calls and texts while using a GitSim eSIM for mobile data. This is possible if your smartphone supports Dual SIM functionality.

How Dual SIM technology helps

Many modern smartphones are equipped with Dual SIM capabilities, often using "Dual SIM Dual Standby" (DSDS) technology. This allows you to have two SIMs active in your phone simultaneously:

  • Your primary SIM (which can be a physical nano-SIM or another eSIM) for your regular phone number.
  • Your GitSim eSIM for affordable mobile data, especially when traveling.

With this setup, your phone can be connected to two different networks at the same time. You can typically choose which SIM is used for mobile data and which is your default for voice calls and SMS messages in your device settings.

Receiving and making calls or texts

When your GitSim eSIM is installed and active for data, you can still:

  • Receive calls and SMS messages on your primary phone number.
  • Make calls and send SMS messages using your primary phone number.

Tip: To avoid potential roaming charges from your primary carrier (see below), consider using internet-based calling and messaging apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime Audio, Skype, or Telegram. These apps will use your GitSim eSIM's data allowance.

Important: Check for roaming charges

While your GitSim eSIM provides data, using your primary SIM for calls and texts while outside your home carrier's network might incur roaming charges from your primary mobile service provider.

Potential Roaming Fees: Always check with your primary mobile carrier about their international roaming rates and policies before you travel if you plan to make or receive calls, or send/receive SMS messages using your primary number abroad. GitSim is not responsible for any charges incurred from your other carrier.
