It's important to know which of your eSIMs is currently set to use mobile data, especially if you have multiple plans (e.g., one for home and one for travel). This guide will show you how to check the active data eSIM and how to switch to a different one if needed.

How to check which eSIM is using data

The steps to identify your active data eSIM vary slightly depending on your device's operating system.

On iOS devices (iPhone/iPad)

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on Cellular (or Mobile Data).
  3. Look for the Cellular Data (or Mobile Data) section. The eSIM plan currently selected here is the one being used for data.
    • If you have multiple eSIMs installed and turned "On" under Cellular Plans (or Mobile Plans), they will be listed, and the active one for data will be clearly indicated.

On Android devices (excluding Samsung)

These steps are for most Android devices, but menu names might vary slightly.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap on Network & internet.
  3. Tap on SIMs or Mobile network.
    • You should see your installed eSIM(s). The device will indicate which eSIM is active for mobile data, often by its label (the nickname you assigned when you installed your eSIM or on other Android devices).

On Samsung Galaxy devices

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap on Connections.
  3. Tap on SIM manager (or SIM card manager).
  4. Scroll down to the Preferred SIMs (or Preferred SIM card) section.
  5. Check which eSIM or line is selected under Mobile data. This is the eSIM currently handling your data connection.

How to switch the eSIM used for data

If you want to change which eSIM provides your mobile data, you can easily do so from your device settings. This allows you to manage data usage across different plans without contacting anyone.

On iOS devices (iPhone/iPad)

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data).
  3. Tap Cellular Data (or Mobile Data).
  4. A list of your available eSIM plans will appear. Select the eSIM plan you wish to use for mobile data.
    • Your iPhone or iPad will now use this newly selected eSIM for all mobile data.

On Android devices

The exact path may vary slightly depending on your Android version and manufacturer.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Network & internet (this might be Connections on some devices).
  3. Tap SIMs or SIM manager (or SIM Card Manager).
  4. Find an option like Mobile data, Preferred SIM for Mobile Data, or similar.
  5. Tap this option and select the eSIM you want to use for data from the list.

You can often set one eSIM for mobile data and a different SIM (eSIM or physical SIM) for calls and texts. These preferences are usually managed in the same SIM or network settings menu.

After switching, your device will route all mobile data traffic through the newly selected eSIM. If you encounter issues connecting to the internet after switching, you might want to review common troubleshooting steps for no internet connection after eSIM installation.
